Description

This 8-hour course provides corrections and probation staff with a practical overview of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), including the history and purpose of the law, current staff responsibilities, and core prevention strategies. Students will learn how PREA standards apply in both custody and community supervision environments, how to recognize and respond to sexual abuse and sexual harassment allegations, and how PREA violations can significantly harm victims, staff, agency operations, and public trust. The course also includes a dedicated block of instruction on PREA documentation, covering the fundamentals of writing a clear and defensible narrative, the required information that must be captured in reports, and common documentation mistakes that increase liability and undermine investigations.
