Assistant Sheriff Shane Matthews is a 31-year veteran of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office and a lifelong Ventura County resident whose career has been defined by servant leadership, operational excellence, and a commitment to developing public safety professionals. Beginning his career in Detention Services in 1995, Shane has served in nearly every facet of law enforcement and corrections, including patrol, narcotics, detectives, aviation, search and rescue, special enforcement, and detention operations. Throughout his distinguished career, he has led specialized teams, supervised complex operations, and earned a reputation as a collaborative leader who values professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Today, Shane oversees the Ventura County Sheriff’s Detention Services Division, providing executive leadership for three county jails, three courthouse holding facilities, and the Civil Unit. Responsible for more than 500 employees and an average daily population of approximately 1,200 incarcerated individuals, he ensures compliance with California Title 15 and Title 24 standards while overseeing the safe and efficient operation of one of California’s premier correctional systems. In addition to his executive responsibilities, Shane is a respected instructor who has taught for both the California State Sheriffs’ Association and the American Jail Association, sharing his expertise in correctional leadership, detention operations, and regulatory compliance with professionals from across the country.
As an Embassy Consulting Services facilitator and leadership consultant, Shane partners with public safety organizations to strengthen leadership, improve organizational performance, and navigate the complex challenges facing today’s law enforcement and corrections professionals.
