Gang Culture and Supervision for Law Enforcement
Gang culture is constantly evolving, and law enforcement professionals need more than outdated identifiers to respond to today’s gang-involved population. Through case studies, scenario-based exercises, and group discussion, participants learn to recognize gang indicators, distinguish objective observations from inference, apply California Penal Code §186.22, and produce accurate, defensible documentation. The course strengthens decision-making, professional communication, and interagency collaboration—preparing officers to respond safely, lawfully, and effectively to gang activity in the field.

Detective Craig Marquez

Detective Marquez has more than 30 years of public safety experience serving the City of Los Angeles. A Detective Supervisor with the Los Angeles Police Department, Craig currently serves as the Officer-in-Charge of Detective Training, where he develops detectives, instructs investigative courses, and helps establish investigative standards for one of the nation’s largest police agencies. His career has included assignments in patrol, sexual assault investigations, child abuse investigations, commercial crimes, gang and narcotics investigations, and Rampart Gang Detectives, providing him with extensive operational and investigative expertise across a broad range of complex criminal investigations. Craig is recognized throughout California as a subject matter expert in gang investigations and criminal investigations. As an instructor for the Robert Presley Institute of Criminal Investigation (ICI) Core Course and Gang Investigations Course, as well as the LAPD Detective School and Supervisor School, he has trained investigators and supervisors from agencies across the state. His instruction combines current case law, real-world investigative experience, practical application, and engaging discussion, equipping participants with skills they can immediately apply in the field.
